OCR: BDC - BOTTOM DEAD CENTER The farthest point in the piston travel down the cylinder. Called dead center because a single cylinder double acting steam engine will not self start from that position. See also Top Dead Center. CLEARANCE VOLUME The volume in the cylnder at TDC. COMPRESSION RATIO The ratio of displacement to clearance volume. CYCLE See Two and Four Cycle. DISPLACEMENT The volume swept by the piston during one stroke (180 degrees rotation of the crankshaft), from BDC to TDC, for example.
